Josh: What’s up everybody! Josh Tapp here again and welcome back to The Lucky Titan Podcast and today we have Kevin Thompson with us here on the mic, Kevin is the CO-Founder of the Tribe before leaders, he’s raised over 16 or generated over 16 million dollars through strategic partnerships, and I’m just so excited of Kevin here because today we’re gonna be talking really about the thing that you all know that I love which is geometric partnership or as Kevin call them strategic partnership, I mean we believe this is everything so I think this is going to be fun to discuss the different sides of how’ve done it and so of the things that he have seen that works the best in his industry so you know Kevin, say what’s up to everybody and tell us something about yourself that most people wouldn’t know about you

Kevin: oh alright, well what’s up everybody (laugh) Hi Josh, I’m excited to our conversation today. (ah) one thing that people wouldn’t know is from 1988 to 1995, I spent 7 years working up in Alaska as a commercial fisherman in order to save up money to start my first business,

Josh: Oh Men, Take me there with you.

Kevin: (laugh)

Josh: so.. What was the first business that you are raising funds for?

Kevin: the first, so the whole time I was at, I have no idea what business I want to start, I was at the FDOA in High School and I just knew, I want to be an entrepreneur, and so I thought, well you know what, you need money to do this let me get money together so that was, that was my path for doing that but when I, when I, I almost lost my life and that if I almost got swapped over boarding we run in a pretty nasty storm and that’s when I decided okay, you’ve saved that enough money, so I  this could be a long story I won’t go with all but I will let you know that the following year ‘96 I started cleaning in a restoration company and I know a guy in Seattle and that he’s in that industry and looking in from the outside and looking like he’s doing pretty good for himself and I’m I’d like to say it was something more than grandiose than that but it was then I decided if he can do it, so can I, that’s why I choose that industry

Josh: (Laugh)

Kevin: and of course that came with his own center challenge here so.

Josh: I thought that’s usually how its starts though. You know it’s like looking at somebody else and saying “I can do that” “I can do that” better than them (laugh)

Kevin: Exactly, exactly, I was smarter and I was better, that’s why I thought, I (I) quickly prove myself wrong (laugh) so.

Josh: You know what’s funny, I think so I’ve work with some restoration companies and I think that is a really cool back story for you because I know that we’d even have them succeed though strategic partnership and that’s where I am really excited and kinda delved into that topic with youof what a strategic partnership looks like and how that works, so could kinda give us a little background on what strategic partnership would be?

Kevin: Sure, I mean really what strategic partnership is all it is, as simplest term is two people coming together to be able to combine their years of experience, expertise, resources, connection and be able accomplish far more together that either party could accomplish in their own, that’s the simplest of term what strategic partnership is and (ah) and you know I give you (ah) my very first strategic partnership happened in all three you know that time I was (ah) I owned that cleaning and restoration business, we had (ah) started in online side of that business this bad ugly website called getmoldsolutions.com (ah) because I was like when you be called  to the one who use the internet and be able to have a nationwide or even worldwide impact is instead of just run the local business, so this website was kinda extension about local business and after a couple of years we had that website producing 12 and  13 thousand dollars a month for the revenuefor the company and my friend Joe called and he’s was one of my men’s here and like “hey” why don’t you come down here to the annual event that he held every year for the cleaning and restoration that he want me to show what’s you’re doing in your website and I was like sure, that’s sounds good and he’s like okay but before you come make sure you document what you are doing and how you do it for the new accursed because there’s gonna be a certain amount of people there, and they will want you on going help and so I was like alright and so we did that October of 2003 I spoke on his event for about an hour and showed what I was doing with my website and I said you know “hey” if this makes sense, do you have your resume with you’d like to have my help, here’s what it looks like, here’s what investment is and we did ended up making 35 thousands in sales of that training.

Josh: wow!

Kevin: through his audience and that was my expression too Josh, I was like wow, look at what, that’s whole lot more money I make in a day running cleaning and restoration business

Josh: Yea no joke (laugh)

Kevin: This was really cool and that was my very first ever strategic partnership although at that time I had no idea that’s what we were doing , I mean it didn’t, it took time to figure out that’s what just happen because we were just two guys, Joe had audience of people that he had a sample there. That they’re gonna do this annual event and talk about me and he was like Kevin, you’ve got value to offer these people and he was like, I’d like you to speak and there’s no talk what so ever between Joe and I, and I’m like men if we do this, were gonna make a kill, we’re gonna make a bunch of money, there’s was no talk of that whatsoever and to make people think doing strategic partnership is really reaching out to people, you know it’s about hey you are here for business to be doing this thing all compensate we’re gonna make money together and that’s like the total run of messaging, like the right messaging and you know what with Joe he saw an opportunity there for me to help his people and what they really saw was I was gonna help him further the existing relationship that he already had with those people and I can tell you that if he would have thought one second that I would have damage the relationship he already had, I don’t care how much money was its take, how much money we’ve potentially make , he would never put me infront of those people, that would have not happen and you know I can share all this now and having high inside and having done hundreds of strategic partnership for at that time, I have no idea that what we’re really doing, but it paved a way whole lot more great thing from coming down the road from there

Josh: Yea, Joe pushes a good guy at that to know ( laugh ) that’s about Kevin Thompson.

Kevin: he definitely is.

Josh: Well, Kevin I just want to ask you this question, I was looking at your website here so I’ve really like to mention because it’s simple , this is for the tribe for leader (excuse me) so its bring the right leaders together at the right time, for he right reasons and provide them a community, build a bond, create a real value and authentic relationships so let me ask you this, ‘cause I loved that what’s the difference between strategic partnership and typical networking.

Kevin: Well typical networking, typical networking sucks, Josh. (laugh)

Josh: yea (amen)

Kevin: Typical Networking, everybody is in the new, with the intention of getting business, making connections that will grow their business all that and the challenge is that they mistakenly believe that it’s all  about telling everyone what they do and yet the thing is one when you’re in environment  where everybody feels like wow in order for this to work and in order for me to get value from this, I need to talk to many people as much as I can, I need a to let them know what I do, exchange business cards and where everybody is that environment talk talk talk….. Nobody’s listening, nobody is making any connection no , I mean you know that’s why so many people hate typical networking coz like I said it sucks but when you focus on the person, when you focus in getting to know them and who they are, what they’re all about, what motivates them to do what they do, why they do it, who they serve, what are the problems they are dealing with, what opportunities they are trying to take advantage of, and you really get to know them and like you hear them out and ask questions on them because you are genuinely interested in getting to know them, and for guy like me, I’m always do defaulting to, well, I wouldn’t help them in some way and like who do I know based on that they are sharing with me that I could connect them with that would help them out and I’ve always been that way and the thing is when we let people, you know when we ask questions and when we genuinely are interested and knowingthe answers to those questions, you know what people like and especially now more than ever people feel like they are not being hurt and when we give them the opportunity , we’re they know that we give them the gift of knowing, like men I hear you, I hear you what you’re saying, I care about you and then there’s a way that I can help you, I wanna do that and I don’t give a damn if I don’t get anything in return from doing this, if I could just give that gift then men, you’re gonna make such an impression doing that. And that’s what real strategic partnership are all about and that’s how they get formed because that’s how we connect with people.

Josh: because  it’s about the giving right and it’s about the collaboration and that’s why love you are saying come out with a spirit and of giving instead of taking, we’ve do done  with our masterminds it’s like when people come to it and I personally bet everybody comes through just to make sure that this happens because if you’re coming in like oh, hey I’m just gonna try and sell myself really well you’re really not get any way well for us we’ve found is we bring them to the room and say what problem do you solved and who do you solved before and then basically you’re saying this is what it is, this is what I saw before and then you’re like this is what I’d like to do and then everybody else in the room thinks okay we’re on three names, there’sthree names I could give you or maybe something I want or maybe there’s something that my audience could use, and it creates these partnership in a way that  are just spectacular that’s why I love what you guys are doing over there  at the Tribe for Leaders, that’s just a spectacular thing, so let’s give our audience some actionable steps now, Kevin, let’s talk about how they can implement this strategic partnership how they start them, how they form them and really how to bring them about where you actually making money after all its done.

Kevin: Okay, the way you start a strategic partnership is by starting a relationship and the way you started that relationship is so damn simple it’s your process and I did not call this term my friend Jessy Elder and I really learn this from him back in 2012 this thing called active appreciation and when we, you know no matter how successful somebody else, no matter how many big business they run, no matter how their big business is, no matter how great this thing looks for that person on the outside looking in I can tell you that there’s not a person on the face at this point they gets enough appreciation and when we just show genuine appreciation for somebody not and now using this strategy , not looking this is a topic just letting be who you are and when you show genuine appreciation for someone you’re gonna get their attention very quickly. And I don’t care how successful they are you know I reached out to so many people all over the years I just know some whether they have podcast or they we’re on interview on a podcast or whether you read a book that they wrote or whether you know just reachout to them and just like genuine, you know men, I really appreciate what we shared here and even why they say why you appreciated that you know what you’re gonna get so much response form it, not everyone’s gonna response back you but a lot of people are gonna respond back to you and it’s gonna open a door for a conversation way more than reaching out to able and say hey we should do this thing together, you know if you, if we did this together we can make all these money if you referred me or I referred business with them, showing appreciation and so, you know you can do this right now, you want an actionable step you have contacts in your cellphone right now, people that you know, you can start sending out just simple text messages our audio messages or whatever, letting those people know something that you genuinely appreciate about them and don’t ask for anything in return, don’t even ask for a reply in return just sent that some active appreciation to some people in you’re like and watch what happens and you’re gonna be, I mean less than 24 hours you’re gonna be amazed at the responds that you get from people.

Josh: Love that! And that’s how you start the relationship you know by genuine appreciation so once you create partnership what are kind of your first step, what should partnership would you create

K: so when I was doing and I was doing my training and coaching business, my partnerships revolve around having people to get my message out there to their audiences that kind of thing but the way I would start , if I reach out to somebody like that using this active appreciation and exercise and stuff and I hear back from somebody when we get, when we suggest that have a conversation or live just like bouncing hey I really appreciate, thanks for sending that I’d love to have conversation with you on that conversation, I did not beginning that conversation by star talking about  me . then I stared to asking question of them so what you are working on right now is that you fired up you know and then just asking ask more as they share asking for more clarifying question about that and totally looking for ways that I might be able to help support from me and usually to do making some introduction and I will tell you that you’re only getting, when you do this and you starting to ask questions to people like this and are genuinely listening to them, you’re only gonna get so far into that conversation until they’re gonna ask you, Kev, tell me about you, tell me about what you’re working on tell me how can I help you. it’s going to come around to that (laugh) and then you get the opportunity after you’ve already given them this amazing experience you haven’t done god damn thing together except for to have a conversation and you’ve given them such an amazing experience and let them be heard, they’re now just wow if there’s a way I can help you in return I would love to be able to do that and they’re just gonna go there, you don’t have to directed there so.

Josh: right, love that you know it’s really comes down to the industry right there’s really no wrong way to do joint metric partnership we’ve found and its always seems to work out, benefitting both of you and so you know we’re kindacaught up heretoday so I wanna ask you Kevin, what would be your final parting of guidance for everybody saying hey this what you should be doing in the when it comes to setting up strategic partnerships.

Kevin: SO you’re looking for an opportunity where you can serve that person, you know whether that’s through furthering relationship whether that is through you know serving the people they serve how can you or somebody you know provide value to that person and help them further their relationships and so if that Is through  offering your services, offering your expertise, offering your guidance or whatever that looks for you know there’s not , I don’t have a hard fast rule of you know this is what a partnership looks like because it can takes so many different forms and you know when I was offering my training for though you know, 13 year period and we hada coaching there we sold over 16 million dollars’ worth of that training and a coachingtaking along with me and wedid that sold to strategic partnerships you know worth 500 strategic partnership sold over 13 year run and yet it was the relationships we’re there are real value are and so my whole goal was to give my partner a great experience which included giving their people a great experience and once we’ve done that this will be your writing down stuff here whenever I schedule strategic partnership with somebody, once we kinda figure out okay what’s was gonna look and I’ve seen it was a collaborative process that wasn’t me saying what its looks like it was the two of us talking of what this is gonna look like and how can I best serve them, so it was a collaborative discussion, then we will schedule the project and yep we’re gonna do this what we gonna do the same exactthing but you know what, what I wanna do is let’s do this project and also lets set us a time right now so that we could have a debrief call afterwards and so just got to see how all of this went and all that so on that phone call afterwards, I would ask three questions of that part, I would ask them you know from your view point what about this whole project went really great from your stand point and the second question I would ask then is okay you know what do you see that in my end that I can improve to make my experience even better for people like you and then the third question is okay now that we had this experience who elsedo you know that I should have a conversation with and see it’s not like hey can you refer me it’s like I gave them a great experience and even the things they didn’t know permanently I’m a let you know strategic partnership that only one of three thing that can possible happen, we’re gonna get the result that we’ve hoped for, we’re gonna get less the result that we hoped for or we’re gonna get better than the result that we’re hoped for and so when after that were gonna see 66% chance is better were gonna get what we want and even if we don’t, and even if we have this big vision and oh that experience that’s gonna happen and even if those result aren’tquite what we’ve hope for we still delivered an amazing experience and that’s what people talk about, that’s why people will refer you.

Josh: love that, well everybody make sure that you go out and take this opportunity to create this partnership, you know what Kevin just talked about is the number one way that we’ve seen business owner succeed, every single entrepreneur I’ve talked to, you know whether they’re just testing out or a billionaire but they’ve succeed it becomes down to the partnerships they form, the growth that they’ve gain through partnering with other people so Kevin thank you so much for coming on today and before we sign off one final question, how can people learn more about tribe for leaders and connect with you?

Kevin: yea the could use TribeForLeaders.com andif what we share there resonates with you and you can go ahead and fill out the form let us know a little bit about you and it will take you to our calendar and that we will schedule a call were both Jules and partner, Jules and myself will be In that call and while in conversation with whatever reason you if it’s not the right fit  we’ll let you know about too,  but if it’s a right fit we’ll tell you more about with what more what we’ve going if that’s making sense and we’re just invite you,

Josh: love that so make sure check out TribeForLeaders.com and Kevin that you so much for coming on today

Kevin: My pleasure, Josh.
